Chapter 11

The days passed in a never-ending parade of gray bleakness. Franny hated waking up and going to bed in the darkness. The wind found its way into the slightest nook and cranny to chill her. She wore the coat a lot, and even the fur mittens when she was sitting inside. All the socks were on her feet, yet her toes were never warm. The only time she wasn’t cold was when she snuggled up with one of the men.

Her rotation between beds had become how they knew whose turn it was to make love. When she devoted her attention to one of them, she inevitably ended up offending or hurting the others. It was incredibly frustrating. It was Cade she craved the most, but this week was Dawson’s. She just didn’t have the same level of connection with him. She hated how much he suffered.

She tried not to think about Cade when she was with the others, but he made her almost happy. If she had to live trapped in hell, at least she had a way to forget. Sex had become her new addiction. For inexperienced men, they all knew how to make her come. When she was actively engaged in coitus, she wasn’t thinking about how frozen her body remained or how much she missed her old life.

Franny liked Nebraska, and when he was drawing, she loved watching the expression of intense concentration on his face. He’d caught her staring a few times, but she hated disturbing him. Any escape from the mindless boredom and subzero temperature was a good thing. She didn’t want to take that from him. Seeing his pictures of summer warmed her a bit.

Even though the guys hadn’t asked her to do so, she’d taken over the cooking. A person could only eat so much stew and oatmeal before something had to change. She’d also learned to sew. Her stitches weren’t as straight as she would have liked, but if she remained stranded there, she’d eventually need something to wear. Doing chores around the cabin kept her busy.

When she stopped to think, a rush of “what if” thoughts stalked her mind. If she had stayed in her car and kept driving, she’d be home. She would have earned that promotion. The last movie in a trilogy she enjoyed should be in theaters by now. Franny vowed to order Chinese food then go shopping if she woke up at home. Thanksgiving passed without the obligatory short and awkward visit with her mother. She should be living and evolving. Here it was just monotony.

Wind howled wildly outside. Franny shivered. Today, she huddled next to the woodstove. Cade sat at the table making bullets. He was carefully measuring the black powder before he glanced in her direction. “I’m thinking I might light the fireplace today. It’s going to be a bad one tonight. I can hear it.”

He was thinking of her, because she hadn’t been trying to hide her misery. He’d been glancing at her with concern all day.
